What is CBD?

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is the secondary active ingredient in marijuana after tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). But unlike THC, CBD is not psychoactive and therefore doesn’t result in a “high.” Despite this, the calming (albeit not impairing) effects of CBD have made it a popular addition to candy (particularly gummies), oils, topical creams and even butter.

CBD derives from hemp as well as marijuana (the two plants are cousins, if you will), and because hemp was made legal by the Farm Bill in 2018, CBD has become increasingly available.

Editor’s note: CBD’s state-to-state legality remains in flux, so please refer to your local laws before purchasing.

Is CBD safe?

Like many supplements, most CBD products are not FDA approved. However, scientific studies support that the compound is effective in treating insomnia, anxiety and chronic pain. Moreover, the World Health Organization asserts that there is no abuse or dependence potential with CBD.

Minimal side effects include nausea, fatigue and changes in mood. Perhaps the greatest concern surrounds the fact that CBD is marketed as a dietary supplement. Because of this, the FDA does not regulate the purity and safety of CBD, so you can’t be certain that a product’s dosage or contents are listed accurately on the packaging. Always use discretion and buy from reputable retailers.

Find out the questions you should ask to determine if a CBD product is safe and effective in The Essential Guide to CBD.

How much CBD should I take?

In edible (or drinkable) form, CBD has a lower concentration than in tinctures or topical products, making edibles a great entry point if you’re just beginning to experiment with CBD. Because each product has a different formulation, we recommend you follow the dosage instructions on the packaging. When in doubt, start with the smallest dose and gauge your tolerance. Many CBD companies also encourage trying their products for a set amount of time (a month, for example), as the benefits may take time to build in your system.
