We are pleased to announce the winners of Taste of Home’s Boards, Platters and More Contest! We invited readers to submit photos and a video of their most inspired food boardsand they delivered.

Home cooks showed us their design skills in boards that were sentimental, nostalgic and just plain fun! Some celebrated holidays, others cultural foods and family traditions. Our panel of judges watched videos from around the country to decide which boards were the most creative and visually stunning.

Meet Our Winners

3rd Place: Scandinavian Snack Board

Kallee Krong-McCreery from Escondido, CA

Our Boards Platters And More Contest Winners 2nd Place Courtesy Kallee Krong Mccreery

Kallee’s board is inspired by her Scandinavian heritage and was made for her family’s New Year’s celebration. There’s lefse flatbread as well as fruits and veggies fresh from her garden. But the real star of the show is her technique. She turned ordinary charcuterie meats into ribbons and rosesand made sure there were no straight lines on the platter. Kallee states, “I think we eat first with our eyes, so I made sure to have lots of colors and shapes.” We couldn’t be happier with the result.

2nd Place: Breakfast Board

Carmelisa Perez from Los Angeles, CA

Breakfast Board

Carmelisa loves to host breakfast get togethers and thought she’d share some of her go-to favorites with this platter. The board has soft-boiled eggs with delectable sourdough toast made to be topped with bacon, ricotta, honey and avocado. Yum! Carmelisa explains, “The thought process was to keep the easy-to-grab items in the middle, the items you need a knife for on the edge and to balance out the colors with fruit that add contrasting colors, and add greens to areas that need a little pop.” This skill really comes through on this neat and minimalistic board.

1st Place: Flag Board

Candy Fichtner from Houston, TX

Our Boards Platters And More Contest Winners 1st Place Courtesy Candy Fichtner

Candy made this flag board for a Fourth of July party. According to Candy, “Nothing says summer to me like red, white and blue.” She incorporated these colors into her design with both sweet and savory snacks. We loved all the fun shapes: stars, cubes, triangles and even fish!

Grand Prize: Pakora Platter

Niv Menon-Saber from Port Elgin, Canada

Pakora Platter

The Pakora Platter is an assortment of deep-fried, crispy vegetarian bites. Inspired by Diwali, Niv says “It is a time of vibrant celebrations, unity and most deliciously…an array of culinary delights.” And an array it is with fresh and vibrant veggies and paneer. We love the three dips that add a pop of color as well as depth of flavor. The first is a spicy mint chutney, the second a tangy tamarind sauce and the third a sweet yogurt mango raita. Masala chai and mango lassi shots add a little more fun to complete the board.

Congratulations to all our winners! Bookmark our Contests page for more ways to participate and win.

How to Make Sweet and Sour Chicken https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/sweet-and-sour-chicken-recipe/ Mon, 31 Jul 2023 14:07:54 +0000 https://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1903641 In just under an hour, you can have a takeout-quality meal on the table and ready to eat.

The post How to Make Sweet and Sour Chicken appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>
You usually order sweet and sour chicken when you want something quick and low maintenance. Maybe you had a late night, maybe you want to stay in, or maybe a craving hit and you couldn’t let go of the idea of sinking your teeth into some fried chicken goodness. Whatever the reason, some part of you thought, “I can’t make it better than takeout.” But what if you could?

What Is Sweet and Sour Chicken?

Sweet and sour chicken comes from China. The name comes from the combination of sugar and vinegar in the sauce. However, unlike the Westernized version of the dish that made it to the States, typically sweet and sour sauce is just used as a dip for various meats. While the sauce still has that same sweet and sour base, the food that has made its way into our hearts is a fried chicken and rice dish.

Here are more Asian recipes we love.

Sweet and Sour Chicken Recipe

This sweet and sour chicken recipe from Lori Burtenshaw of Terreton, Idaho makes 4 servings.

Ingredients

Chicken:

 • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1 inch chunks
 • 1 tablespoon and 2 teaspoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
 • 1 tablespoon sherry or reduced-sodium chicken broth
 • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
 • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
 • 2 tablespoons plus 1/3 cup cornstarch, divided
 • 2 tablespoons canola oil

Sauce:

 • 1 can (20 ounces) unsweetened pineapple chunks
 • 2 tablespoons sugar
 • 1/4 cup cider vinegar
 • 1/4 cup ketchup
 • 1/2 teaspoon salt
 • 3 cups hot cooked rice
 • Optional: bell pepper

Directions

Step 1: Season the chicken

In a large shallow dish, combine 1 tablespoon soy sauce, sherry, salt, garlic powder and ginger. Add the chicken. Turn the chicken to coat. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Step 2: Make the sauce

Drain the pineapple chunks, reserving the juice and setting the pineapple aside. Add enough water to the juice to measure 1 cup. In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons cornstarch, sugar and pineapple juice mixture until smooth. Stir in vinegar, ketchup and remaining soy sauce. Set aside.

Step 3: Cook the chicken

Drain the chicken, discarding the marinade. Place the remaining cornstarch in a large shallow dish. Add the chicken, a few pieces at a time, and turn to coat.

In a large skillet or wok, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add the chicken. Cook and stir until no longer pink. Remove and keep warm.

Step 4: Finish the sauce

Stir pineapple juice mixture and add it to the pan. Bring to a boil and cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Add the chicken and reserved pineapple and make sure it’s heated through. Serve with rice.

Tips for Making Sweet and Sour Chicken

Sweet And Sour Chicken with rice bowl and chopsticks

How can you add heat to sweet and sour chicken?

Do you want a little less sweet in your sweet and sour sauce? You can add red pepper flakes for spice. Or you can even chop some red peppers into the dish.

How can you thicken the sauce?

The sauce thickens even more as it cools. But if your sauce is still watery, adding equal parts cornstarch and water will thicken the sauce. If the reverse problem occurs, and your sauce becomes too thick, add water to thin it out.

What else can you put in sweet and sour chicken?

The meal is already delicious on its own, but you can add veggies like green peppers and onion to your sweet and sour chicken. These enhance the flavor and add a bit of kick. Even more unconventional choices like mushrooms, carrots and baby corn can take well to the sauce.

How should you store leftover sweet and sour chicken?

Sweet and sour chicken is best served fresh, so it doesn’t lose any crispiness. But if you have leftovers, they should be stored in an airtight container. They’ll last 3-4 days in the refrigerator. You can freeze the chicken up to 3 months.

Reheat leftover sweet and sour chicken in the oven at 350 for 15-20 minutes or in the air fryer at 350 for 3-4 minutes.

As a coffee lover, I adore coffee-flavored ice cream and even coffee-flavored bubble tea. But that’s not the end of the line for coffee treats. Enter: chocolate-covered espresso beans. While they might be time-consuming to make, they’re a super yummy snack to have aroundespecially when hosting.

How to Make Chocolate-Covered Espresso Beans in 3 Steps

This recipe from the Taste of Home Test Kitchen makes 1 cup of chocolate-covered espresso beans.

Ingredients

Hersheys Chocolate Chips On Plate With Cocoa and espresso beans On Wood Surface

 • 2/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips
 • 1-1/2 teaspoons shortening
 • 1/2 cup espresso beans
 • Baking cocoa, optional

Directions

Step 1: Melt chocolate chips

Melted Chocolate chips In a Bowl On Wood Surface

In a microwave, melt the chocolate chips and shortening. Stir until smooth.

Step 2: Cover espresso beans in chocolate

Dip the espresso beans in chocolate. Allow the excess chocolate to drip off and then place on waxed paper.

Step 3: Allow time to dry

Espresso Beans Covered In Melted Chocolate Being Placed On Waxed Paper

Let stand until set. This should take 10-15 minutes. If desired, roll in cocoa. Store in an airtight container.

Are Chocolate-Covered Espresso Beans the Same as Coffee Beans?

The difference between espresso and coffee beans is how they’re prepared. Espresso beans have a dark roast and are more concentrated. Coffee beans are roasted for a shorter amount of time.

Can You Get a Caffeine Buzz from Chocolate-Covered Espresso Beans?

There is anywhere between 6 to 13 mg of caffeine in a chocolate-covered espresso bean, though keep in mind some of this caffeine comes from the chocolate. For reference, an average cup of coffee has about 165 mg of caffeine.

How Long Do Chocolate-Covered Espresso Beans Stay Fresh?

Chocolate-covered coffee beans can last up to 6 months in an air-tight container. If you choose to freeze them, they can last up to a year.

Baked brie with jam is the perfect appetizer centerpiece at any dinner party. It dresses up a table yet is so easy to make. One bite of this cheesy, fruity dish just isn’t enough!

Baked Brie with Jam Recipe

Tom Roemer from Colorado Springs, Colorado shared this 8 serving, 20-minute appetizer.

Ingredients

 • 1 round (8 ounces) Brie cheese
 • 1/2 cup mixed berry jam
 • 1/2 cup sliced almonds
 • Assorted crackers

Directions

Step 1: Preheat oven

Preheat your oven to 350F. It’s best to have your brie out before baking.

Step 2: Add toppings

Place your cheese in a 9-in. pie plate and top with jam and almonds.

Step 3: Bake

Bake until the cheese is softened, about 15-20 minutes.

Step 4: Serve

Plain crackers are the perfect vehicle for brie since they don’t distract from the flavors of the cheese. Wait until the brie is at room temperature or slightly warm to serve. Never serve it chilled!

Tips for Making Baked Brie with Jam

Baked Brie With Jam

Can you make baked brie with puff pastry?

Baked brie in puff pastry is nothing short of elegant. You’ll have to adjust the oven temperature and baking time to the recipe. But the main takeaway is that the jam (or preserves) are spread in the center of the puff pastry. The cheese is then placed over the jam.

Can you use other jams?

Yep! The fun in cooking comes from experimenting. If you have a favorite fruit, start there! But if you’re short on inspiration, you can try some of our favorite spreads. A homemade jam goes a long way.

Can you use other nuts?

Brie with almonds is an unbeatable combination. But other nuts work as well. Walnuts and pecans pair wonderfully with brie. You can even try pistachios on for size.

This lovely appetizer will make a great statement piece on any charcuterie board. Did you know you can eat the rind too? It’s savory, sweet and nutty. What more could you ask for? If you liked this dish, take a stab at some of our best brie recipes!

Ingredients

 • 2 large sweet potatoes, cut into thin strips
 • 2 tablespoons canola oil
 • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
 • 1 teaspoon paprika
 • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
 • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Directions

 1. Preheat air fryer to 400°. Combine all ingredients; toss to coat. Place on greased tray in air-fryer basket. Cook until lightly browned, 10-12 minutes, stirring once. Serve immediately.

Air-Fryer Sweet Potato Fries Tips

Are fries healthy when cooked in an air fryer?

Fries that are air-fried, both sweet potato and those made from regular potatoes, are healthier than their deep-fried counterparts. That’s because instead of using quarts of oil in a deep fryer, you can use just a small amount, or none at all, in an air fryer. Plus, you'll still achieve beautifully crispy fries. For more tips and tricks, see our ultimate air-fryer guide.

How do I make these sweet potato fries if I don’t have an air fryer?

If you don’t have an air fryer, you can make these fries in an oven. Preheat oven to 425° F. Combine all ingredients; toss to coat. Spread fries in a single layer on two baking sheets. Bake until crisp, 35-40 minutes. Serve immediately.

What goes well with sweet potato fries?

The first thing that probably comes to mind is the classic burger and fries combo. There’s no beating that, but don’t discount other pub and restaurant fare such as fried fish, chicken tenders and hot, hearty sandwiches of all kinds. If you’re trying to eat healthier, pair sweet potato fries with grilled chicken, seafood, sheet pan suppers and other quick and healthy entrees.

What Is Wagyu Beef—And Is It Worth Ordering? https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/what-is-wagyu/ https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/what-is-wagyu/#respond Thu, 07 Nov 2019 04:54:42 +0000 http://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1269855 Why is wagyu beef so expensive at a steakhouse, and is it even worth it? Is your money better spent elsewhere?

The post What Is Wagyu Beef—And Is It Worth Ordering? appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>
You don’t need a six-figure salary to visit a steakhouseunless you’re looking at the wagyu beef section. The price of wagyu steaks is enough to take your breath away. The smallest wagyu steak costs more than the largest filet mignon (the most expensive regular steak on the menu). On average, wagyu beef can run more than $200 per pound (that’s $12.50 per ounce!), so what gives? Why is wagyu beef so expensive, and is this uber-expensive steak truly worth it?

What is wagyu beef?

The word wagyu has a pretty literal translation: “wa” means Japanese, and “gyu” is cow. But that doesn’t mean that any Japanese cow qualifies. Wagyu beef breeds are carefully selected, and genetic testing is used to ensure only the best are allowed into the program. By paying so much attention to genetics, the beef becomes genetically predisposed to have a higher quality than most steaks. This tender, well-marbled beef really does taste better than the competition.

In Japan, only four types of cattle are used: Japanese Black, Japanese Brown, Japanese Polled and Japanese Shorthorn. American wagyu programs primarily use Japanese Black, although there are a few Japanese Brown in the mix (known as Red Wagyu in the States).

Why is wagyu beef so expensive?

In 1997, Japan declared wagyu a national treasure and banned any further exportation of cattle, which means they largely control the market on wagyu beef. American ranchers are working hard to increase the production of this sought-after beef, but only 221 animals were exported to the United States before the ban was in place. That’s a small pool considering that Japan uses progeny testing to ensure only the best genetics are kept for breeding.

The other thing that keeps wagyu so expensive is Japan’s strict grading system for beef. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) classifies beef as Prime, Choice, Select or a lower grade. The Japanese Meat Grading Association (JMGA) goes into way more depth with wagyu, grading the beef’s yield and ranking quality based on fat marbling, color, brightness, firmness, texture and quality of fat. The highest grade is A5, but the fat quality scores are crucially important. These scores range from 1 to 12, and by JMGA standards, USDA prime beef would only achieve a fat quality score of four.

How is wagyu beef raised?

Wagyu cattle are chosen in a highly selective process. They are raised by a breeder until they reach almost a year old and are sold, for a hefty price, to a farmer. Many take to a strict grain diet to encourage marbling.

Joseph Decuis in Roanoke, IN is the only restaurant in the United States raising Wagyu with traditional Japanese husbandry practices. The beef is all natural, raised humanely and drug free. They verify pedigree through DNA testing and even play music to the cattle to ensure a happy environment.

How do you cook wagyu beef?

BBQ Grilled wagyu Rib Eye beef meat steak with herbs in steel tray. Orange background. Top view

Because the quality of the beef is so high, it’s best to stick with a simple cooking method. The best way to cook wagyu is to first sprinkle the beef with a little salt and pepper. Then, sear it in a cast-iron pan over high heat for three to four minutes.

Is wagyu beef worth it?

There are plenty of tricks to get cheap meat to taste great, so why drop so much coin on wagyu? For starters, it literally melts in your mouth. The fat in wagyu beef melts at a lower temperature than most beef, which gives it a buttery, ultra-rich flavor. All that fat also makes the beef juicier than a regular steak, and since it contains more fatty acids, it also has a more appealing aroma.

Wagyu beef is best consumed in smaller, three- or four-ounce portions; a huge steak would overload your taste buds. Considering its high price tag, you want to appreciate every bite!

Wagyu is also great in yakitori-style beef skewers, or traditional Japanese dishes like shabu-shabu or sukiyaki that feature thinly sliced beef. These dishes will let you enjoy the flavor of this high-quality beef in smaller quantities (without breaking the bank, too).

While an incredible piece of meat, it’s not practical to enjoy wagyu regularly. For most people, it’s a once in a lifetime experience. To make the most out of your typical steakhouse experience, order a steak that you can’t find at the local butcher shop (like dry-aged steaks). Or go all-in for a tomahawk steak or something that you might not normally cook.

How to Clean Wooden Spoons https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/how-to-clean-a-wooden-spoon/ https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/how-to-clean-a-wooden-spoon/#respond Wed, 17 Jul 2019 22:25:20 +0000 http://www.tasteofhome.com/?p=1121450 Sure, wooden spoons are kitchen staples. But frequent use results in a lot of wear and tear! Learn our best tips and tricks for how to clean a wooden spoon.

The post How to Clean Wooden Spoons appeared first on Taste of Home.

]]>
Your trusty wooden spoon is a must-have, and for good reason. It won’t scratch surfaces, leach chemicals or conduct heat, meaning it never melts. In fact, our Test Kitchen staff swears by wooden spoons! See what other kitchen gadgets they recommend, too.

Because wooden spoons are so versatile, frequent use can result in a lot of wear and tear. When that spoon is looking worse for wear, you might be tempted to toss itbut you don’t have to. In fact, you can bring it back to life using some simple tricks.

Benefits of Wooden Utensils

There are many benefits to using wooden utensils. Practically speaking, wooden utensils won’t damage your nonstick pans. They also don’t take the seasoning off your cast-iron skillets. They’re heat resistant, so they won’t get hot like metal utensils. Finally, they’re naturally anti-bacterial, making them safe tools to use.

Wooden utensils also have a history within them. Whetstone Woodenware of Silver Lake, IN, who makes all of their products in-house, believes that wood has a story. Most of their kitchenware is made of hard maple, and maple trees live up to 100 years on average! From tree to spoon, there’s a history that can make your kitchen feel more ancestral, especially when making recipes that have been passed down through generations.

Best Types of Wood for Utensils

Wooden cutlery kitchen ware

Hardwoods make for the most sturdy kitchenware. These include the tried and true maple trees, but also oak, birch and walnut. These types of trees are usually deciduous trees, which means they lose their leaves in the fall.

How to Clean a Wooden Spoon

Wash by hand

Soon after you cook with your wooden spoon, wash it with warm, soapy water to prevent any stains from setting. Pat the spoon dry with a towel and then let it thoroughly air dry before putting it away. Never let a wooden spoon sit in water for too long because the wood will absorb the water, expand and then contract as it dries, which can result in cracks.

Also, never put your wooden spoons in the dishwasher! The steam and dry cycle can crack the wood. Once your spoon splinters, cracks or frays, it’s time to toss it. Bacteria (and smells) can get stuck in the cracks.

Speaking of bacteria, check out the places in your home that are covered with germs.

Scrub stains away

lemon and salt on a wooden cutting board with a knife and wooden spoon in the background

If your spoons are stained and soapy water isn’t cutting it, it’s time to grab some kitchen essentials to get them looking new. After washing with soapy water, pour salt onto the spoon and scrub it with a halved lemon. Not only will this combo remove stubborn stains, it’ll keep things smelling fresh. Rinse with cool water and dry.

If things are still smelly, create a paste of baking soda and water, and then scrub that in with a halved lemon. Baking soda is great at neutralizing organic acids. That’s why we love cleaning with baking soda!

Remember, if your spoons are stained, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re dirty. Even stubborn food stains, like those from tomato sauce or turmeric, will eventually fade over time.

Sand and reseason

Wooden cooking spoon on wood background

If all else fails, use sandpaper to lightly scrub away the dirty layer of wood. You’ll need to reseason the spoon before using it again. To reseason, preheat your oven to 350F. Wipe the spoon with a neutral oil (like grapeseed or mineral oil) and place in the oven for two to three minutes.

It’s a good idea to periodically condition your wooden spoons with oil to help them last longer. Even quickly rubbing them with oil and wiping the excess away will help them stay fresh!

What Oil to Use on Wooden Utensils

Neutral oils are the best for your wooden kitchenware. Natural oils, like olive oil or vegetable oil, can sour wooden utensils after being exposed to the air for too long. That’s why you have to check that the oil you use to clean your spoons is a food-safe mineral oil. Mineral oil is odorless and won’t damage the color of your products. It also has a long shelf life.

Its roots are in barbecue

The first McDonald’s opened way back in 1940 in San Bernadino, California, but they weren’t flipping burgersthey were serving up barbecue! That first McDonald’s location is now a museum. The first franchised McDonald’s location you’ll recognize designed in the traditional McDonald’s style wasn’t opened until 1955 in Des Plaines, Illinois.

The Scientific Reason Why McDonald’s Fries Are So Good https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/scientific-reason-mcdonalds-fries-good/ Mon, 05 Feb 2018 15:10:56 +0000 http://origin-www.tasteofhome.com/?p=86648 You're not the only one who can't stop eating them. Ever wondered why?

The post The Scientific Reason Why McDonald’s Fries Are So Good appeared first on Taste of Home.

Everyone knows what it’s like to eat McDonald’s french fries. As soon as you pick up the box, you get a whiff of that unmistakable frying oil scent reminiscent of drive-thru windows and fast-food counters.

You grip that iconic red box with the famous arches on the front, holding a generous handful of stiff golden sticks. Then you take the first bite and hear that satisfying crunch through the crispy outer layer, with the salt so discernible you can feel it leaping onto your tongue. And then the fluffy, soft inside: some magical combination of potato that manages to taste a million times better than any fries you’ve had before.

They’re warm and satisfying, and you polish them off one by one. Before you know it, the whole box is gone. If you want to get more fries, then make sure you know about this McDonalds French fry hack.

It makes you wonder: What do they put in McDonald’s fries to make you eat your way to the bottom of the carton? As it turns out, it’s not just one thingit’s a spellbinding combination of things, creating a taste experience unlike any other fast-food chain’s. To make it easier to digest, we’ve broken down the secret McDonald’s recipe into three components.

How the Smell of Oil Affects the Flavor

Scientists believe our sense of smell might be responsible for up to 90% of perceived flavor. If you ever doubt this statistic, just think about how unappetizing food seems when you have a cold and your nose is blocked.

Without that delicious aroma, McDonald’s french fries wouldn’t taste as good. This smelland the taste that comes with itis almost exclusively from the oil in which the fries are cooked.

Like most fried foods, McDonald’s fries are cooked in canola oil. But this didn’t used to be the case. Beef tallow was initially used because the supplier for the chain couldn’t afford vegetable oil.

As health concerns over saturated fat grew in the 1990s, McDonald’s finally made the switch to vegetable oil. Unfortunately, customers noticed that the fries didn’t taste how they used to. To mimic the chains original oil blend, the oil is laced with natural flavoring to replicate that mouthwatering smell.

In other words, the delicious scent we know and love is actually the smell of potatoes cooked in beef fat, an aroma so powerful it makes the fries seem even tastier! Have leftover? Here’s how to reheat McDonald’s fries at home.

Salt, Sugar and Fat

The smell might get you to take that first bite, but it’s the taste that brings you back for more. While homemade french fries don’t require much more than salt, potatoes and oil, McDonald’s has mastered the art of combining ingredients to bring that treasured sensation to the finished product. The main players? Salt, sugar and fat.

Including one or two of those in a recipe makes it good, but having all three sends it over the top. The perfect equilibrium of these ingredients is known as the “bliss point.”

American market researcher and psychophysicist, Howard Moskowitz, stated that a bliss point is the point where the levels of saltiness, sweetness and richness are perceived as being just right. Within the food industry, this combination created a wave of craveable and addicting foods.

Eating those tasty McDonald’s fries even releases dopamine in your brain, the neurotransmitter that triggers feelings of pleasure. So how does McDonald’s do it? In addition to frying and seasoning the fries, McDonald’s coats them in dextrose, a form a sugar.

The Right Potatoes

The crunch, or more specifically the mouthfeel, is the way something feels as you eat it. How hard is it to break with your teeth? What does the texture feel like on your tongue? Everyone judges mouthfeel differently, but McDonald’s has clearly found one that appeals to most of us.

The most common potatoes used for McDonald’s fries include the Russet Burbank, Russet Ranger, Umatilla Russet and the Shepody. These potatoes are known for being fluffy on the inside while still maintaining a crunch on the outside.

Their website states that “The suppliers we work with first peel, cut and blanche the potatoes. They then dry, partially fry and quickly freeze the fries for our restaurants. Once in our kitchens, we cook them in our canola-blend oil so you can have them crispy and hotjust the way you like them.”

Maybe that’s what separates McDonald’s fries from others in the fast-food industry; knowing what customers love about their fries and delivering seamlessly every time. When you put all those details together, it’s no mystery why these fries are addictive.

If you’re desperate for an inexpensive, non-toxic, chemical-free cleaner, don’t send out a distress signal. Just open your kitchen cabinet. Chances are, there’s an unassuming bottle of white vinegar lurking in the back that can save the day! Just grab a rag or a microfiber towel and get to work cleaning with vinegar. It’ll keep your home feeling clean, smelling fresh and looking sparkly and bright. Here are a few tips for washing a microfiber towel.

Kitchen

 • Refrigerator:To keep your fridge looking pristine, wipe down the shelves and walls with a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water. To keep it even cleaner, use these tips to organize your fridge the right way.
 • Cutting Board:Germs can build up on a wood surface, so spray your cutting board at least once a week with straight white vinegar, rinse thoroughly and dry completely.
 • Microwave:To clean up stubborn spatters, mix 1/2 cup each white vinegar and water in a glass bowl or measuring cup. Place in microwave and heat on high 2 to 3 minutes until it boils. Let it sit for a minute with the door closed, then wipe down the interior with a sponge or soft cloth. Stains should come right off!
 • Countertops:A daily spritz and wipe with undiluted white vinegar helps remove spills, stains and odors and keeps countertops looking shiny and new. CAUTION: Do not use vinegar on granite, marble or any porous stone countertops. The acidity of vinegar can etch the stone. (Countertops too cluttered to clean? Try these simple tricks to gain more counter space.)
 • Plastic Containers:Remove pesky stains and odors from plastic containers by coating them with white vinegar and letting them sit overnight. Rinse thoroughly.
 • Tea or Coffee Cups:Embarrassed to have friends over for coffee because of the stains in your cups? Mix a solution of equal parts white vinegar and salt or baking soda. Scrub the cups gently and rinse.
 • Fruit and Veggie Wash:Rinsing fruits and vegetable with 2 tablespoons of white vinegar added to one pint of water helps kill more pesticides than rinsing with water alone.
 • Appliance Cleaner:It’s easy to remove buildup and keep your dishwasher and coffeepot running smoothly. Once a month, simply pour 1 cup of vinegar into an empty dishwasher or coffeepot and run it through a cycle.

Bed & Bath

 • Mattress Freshener:Combat pesky dust mites, mildew and odors with a solution of white vinegar, a splash of rubbing alcohol and a few drops of tea tree oil. Pour mixture into a spray bottle, spritz the mattress, and allow to dry thoroughly before making the bed.
 • Shower:For a sparkling clean shower, boil white vinegar and put it in a spray bottle. Spray down the walls and glass door with the vinegar, keeping everything damp by spritzing every five minutes for a total of 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. For stubborn mold, water spots or soap scum, soak a non-scratch sponge in white vinegar, sprinkle it with baking soda, and scrub vigorously. (Did you know you can clean your shower head with baking soda and a zip-top bag? And here’s how to wash your shower curtain liner.)
 • Floor Tile:Mix 1/2 cup white vinegar with a gallon of warm water and mop floor tiles. Allow to air dry. (Do not use on stone tiles or unsealed grout.)
 • Tub and Sink: Close the drain and pour 1/2 cup white vinegar around the drain. Allow the vinegar to sit for several hours, working its way into hardened deposits and soap scum. Scrub drain area with a non-scratch sponge, drain out the vinegar and rinse thoroughly. For hard-to-remove lime buildup, create a paste of 1 teaspoon white vinegar and 2 tablespoons coarse salt. Rub paste into deposit, scrub with a non-scratch sponge and rinse. (Check out must-know hacks for cleaning with salt.)
 • Toilet:Everybody uses it, so here’s an easy way to keep it clean. Pour one cup of white vinegar into the toilet bowl and let it sit overnight. Sprinkle baking soda into the bowl, scrub with a toilet brush, then flush. (Here are more ways to clean with baking soda.)
 • Drain Cleaner:If your drains are sluggish, pour in one cup of baking soda followed by 1 cup of white vinegar. Allow the solution to bubble and foam, then let it sit for several hours. Pour boiling water down the drain to flush the clog.
 • Hair Brightener:Remove product buildup and brighten your hair by rinsing with 1 tablespoon of white vinegar from roots to ends once a month.
 • Skin Softener: Keep your soles feeling smooth by soaking your feet in 1 part white vinegar to 2 parts water. Scrub gently to remove rough spots.

Laundry

 • Fabric Softener:For a chemical-free fabric softener, add a cup of white vinegar to the final wash or rinse cycle. (Adding even 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the wash cycle helps keep dryer lint from sticking to your clothes and helps reduce static cling. And here are unexpected uses for dryer sheets that aren’t laundry-related.)
 • Deodorizer:Dealing with stinky gym socks? Add 1 cup of white vinegar to a large pot of water. Bring the mixture to a boil. Remove from heat and submerge socks completely. Soak socks overnight, then wash and dry as usual.
 • Scuff Remover:Reduce the appearance of scuff marks on your shoes or handbags and restore their natural shine by wiping them down with white vinegar.

Living Room

 • Glass Cleaner:To remove fingerprints, smears and water spots from glass-top tables, wipe with a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar.
 • Furniture Polish:Buff your wood furniture to a nice shine by mixing 1/4 cup white vinegar and 1 cup olive oil. Add a few drops of lemon or orange oil if you like. Wipe solution onto furniture and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. (Test in an inconspicuous place first.)
 • Candle Wax Remover:To remove residue left by candle wax, wipe the affected area with a cloth that has been soaked in equal parts white vinegar and water. (Test on an inconspicuous area first.)
 • Carpet Rinse:Soap residue left in carpets after shampooing can actually attract dirt. Remove the residue by rinsing the carpet with a solution of 1/2 cup white vinegar per gallon of water.
 • Carpet Spot Remover:If Fido isn’t potty trained yet, salvage the carpet by wetting down urine spots with 2 tablespoons white vinegar, then sprinkle with baking soda. Work the solution into the carpet with a brush. Allow to dry overnight. Vacuum up solution. (Test on an inconspicuous area first.)

Exteriors

 • Window Cleaner:To get rid of dirt and streaks on windows, mix 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol and 1/3 cup white vinegar in a 32-oz. spray bottle and fill with distilled water. Spray windows and wipe off with a lint-free cloth. Learn how to make your own homemade window cleaner.
 • Frost Deterrent:Keep car windows frost-free in winter by spraying with a solution of 3 parts white vinegar to 1 part water. The acidity in the vinegar hinders the formation of ice on the window.
 • Grill Cleaner:If your grill grate is full of gunk from too many charred steaks or burgers, try removing the buildup by spraying white vinegar on crumpled up aluminum foil and vigorously scrubbing the grate.
 • Weed Killer:Keep your neighbors happy by pouring straight white vinegar directly onto the weeds in the cracks of your sidewalk and driveway. Saturate the weed thoroughly to make sure you reach the root.
 • Paint Brush Cleaner:Place caked-on paint brushes in a pot or saucepan (not used for cooking) and soak in white vinegar for an hour. Place the pot on the stove and bring the vinegar to a simmer. Drain the pot and rinse the brushes with water.
 • Screw Release:If you have a stubborn screw that won’t come loose, try pouring vinegar slowly over the screw until thoroughly saturated. Let the vinegar sit for a few minutes, then loosen the screw.

Pets

 • Flea Repellent:Help keep annoying fleas and ticks at bay by spraying your dog with a mixture of 1 cup white vinegar to 1 quart water.
 • Litter Box Deodorizer:Don’t forget the cat! Remove odors by pouring 1/2 inch of white vinegar into an empty litter box. Let the vinegar stand for 20 minutes, then rinse the box with water.

While white vinegar is a savior when it comes to a cheap, chemical-free way to clean your home, there are a few times it should be avoided. As mentioned above, do not use white vinegar on granite or marble countertops because the acidity can etch the stone. The same holds true for stone floor tiles (avoid lemon and ammonia, too!) and waxed surfaces. There are many more things you should never clean with vinegar, like iron and unsealed grout!
