Ginger, garlic powder and green onion blend nicely for this marinated salmon. We've found it tastes even better when marinated in the fridge overnight. We also like to use this versatile mixture when grilling chicken! —Dan Strumberger, Farmington, Minnesota

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup orange juice
  • 1/3 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 green onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 salmon fillet (1-1/2 pounds and 3/4 inch thick)

Directions

  1. For marinade, mix first 6 ingredients. In a shallow bowl, combine salmon and 2/3 cup marinade; refrigerate 30 minutes, turning occasionally. Reserve remaining marinade for basting.
  2. Place salmon on an oiled grill rack over medium heat, skin side down; discard marinade remaining in bowl. Grill salmon, covered, until fish just begins to flake easily with a fork, 15-18 minutes, basting with reserved marinade during the last 5 minutes.
Ginger Honey Marinated Salmon Tips

Can you marinate ginger honey salmon for longer than 30 minutes?

You only need to marinate gingered honey salmon for 30 minutes, but you can leave it in the refrigerator overnight if that works better for your schedule. It’s best to keep the marinating time under 24 hours, though. The acid from the oranges breaks down the proteins in the fish, and too much time can give the salmon a mushy texture.

How else can you cook ginger honey marinated salmon?

If the grill isn’t in the cards, take this salmon inside and cook it in the oven. Our favorite indoor method for a whole fillet involves browning each side in an ovenproof skillet for 3 minutes. Then, bake the salmon in a 400°F oven (skin-side down) until the fish flakes easily with a fork, about 8 to 10 minutes. Look to other easy salmon recipes for guidance on other cooking techniques.

How can you make the ginger honey marinade your own?

Play around with herbs and spices. Instead of green onion, swap in a teaspoon of onion powder, or spice up the mixture with fresh chilies, cayenne pepper or smoky chipotle powder. There are so many fantastic ideas for marinades for salmon, feel free to incorporate some of your favorite flavorings into this marinade.

How should you store leftover marinated salmon?

Leftover salmon can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The best way to reheat the salmon is in a low-temperature oven: 10 to 15 minutes in a 300° oven works great.
