Artichoke Chicken Pesto Pizza Exps Sdam19 23872 E12 07 5b 1

Our team started with 10 different premade crusts for this taste test. Each was prepped according to the package’s instructions and topped with some pizza sauce and a sprinkling of cheese. From there, our team of serious pizza pundits sampled each option. To keep things fair, the identity of each crust was kept a secret until after the pizzas were sampled.

Do you know?  You can freeze pizza dough. Try the best way to store pizza dough for future pizza nights or last-minute cravings!

As always, the samples were judged according to three standard categories:

  • Appearance: A good pizza crust should invite you to grab a slice. Bubbly crusts with a nice, golden color are always a positive sign.
  • Texture: For this test, our team made it their mission to find great crusts that would appeal to all pizza lovers, including crispy, hand-tossed and thick crusts. The culinarians all took notes on how each held up to toppings as well as the general texture.
  • Flavor: Sure, the toppings may be the star of the show, but a pizza crust should taste good on its own too!

Check out the premade crusts our team would use to create this Artichoke Chicken Pesto Pizza—and more.

Most Like Homemade

Boboli Original Pizza Crust

One of the signatures of homemade pizza dough is the yeasty flavor and chewy texture. With Boboli Original Pizza Crust, you get that same feeling without the fuss.

This Boboli crust is on the thicker side and has browned edges sprinkled with a bit of Parmesan. The result is crispy on the outside and soft in the center. You get a bit of saltiness from the shredded Parm but mostly you taste that wonderful yeast flavor that’s prominent in good bread—and pizza.

This pizza crust is also robust enough to hold lots of sauce, cheese and a smattering of whatever you like best, including supreme-style toppings: sausage, peppers, onions and mushrooms.

Senior Editor Emily Racette Parulski sums this brand up best: “If you want something that feels almost homemade, go with this brand.”

Best Hand-Tossed-Style Pizza Crust

Stonefire Artisan Thin Pizza Crust

Hand-tossed pizza crust has some of the chew that you get from a pan pizza but also maintains some crispness. If this is your style (or just want to please everyone at the pizza party), go for Stonefire Artisan Thin Pizza Crust.

According to Josh Rink in the Test Kitchen, “This pizza has good visual appeal: caramelized crust with a few charred bubbles.”

What does this mean for flavor and texture? All good things. Stonefire’s premade pizza crusts have a satisfyingly tender outer edge while the center of the pizza bakes up crispy. It strikes just the right balance between chewy and cracker-like. This would be a welcome premade crust to start any of these easy pizza recipes, including this five-star Arugula Pizza.

Best Cracker-Thin Pizza Crust

Golden Home Ultra Thin Pizza Crust

If a cracker-like crust is your preferred way to pizza, try Golden Home Ultra Thin Pizza Crust.

This premade pizza crust option bakes up nice and brown around the edges and has a satisfying crunch. “It’s really thin and crispy, which is my kind of pizza,” says Ellie Crowley in the Test Kitchen.

And while this crust is very thin (it’s akin to a St. Louis-style crust), it does have enough structural integrity to support a handful of toppings, so don’t be shy when layering on the pepperoni!

Best Thick Pizza Crust

MIA Pizza Crust

If you’re the type that prefers a Chicago-style deep-dish pizza, you’ll want a shortcut that gives you a similar thick crust experience: MIA Pizza Crust.

This MIA premade pizza crust bakes up plush and fluffy. “It’s definitely a thick crust with a nice, chewy bite,” explains the Test Kitchen’s Maggie Knoebel.

Because of the thick texture of this crust, our pizza pros suggest loading this one up with all the things you love. Even though this crust is soft, the bottom is crisp and gives the pizza the strength it needs to hold all the extras—like the peppers, onions and beef on this Fast Philly Cheesesteak Pizza. In fact, you might want to add more than usual so you achieve the right balance of crust, cheese, sauce and toppings.

Flavor-wise, this crust tastes darn good. You won’t be tossing that last bit of crust away. Instead, our team suggests sopping up a little extra sauce and treating it like a breadstick.
