Between our homes and work, a lot of us like to hang out in our so-called "third places" like a friend's house or the coffee shop. Turns out a good portion of society also likes to jump onto a "third device" between our computers and phones and we think Samsung's Galaxy Tab A8 strikes the right balance. This weekend, you can pick one up and save more than 20% on a great Android slab.

OnePlus Pad review: A new challenger enters the ring

A welcome addition to the Android tablet market, despite a few questionable choices

After a decade of lukewarm releases and outright bombs, I'm not sure anyone could've seen the coming Android tablet renaissance (tablet-aissance?). For years, consumers have had the choice between a dozen different Samsung variants, cheap-for-good-reason Amazon Fire Tablets, or… an iPad. Occasionally, you could find yourself a ChromeOS-powered slate, though even then, you were usually looking at hybrids or 2-in-1s, not full-blown tablets.

The Pixel Tablet looks primed for success, but it's going to come down to Google's messaging

All leaks so far point to a competitive device, and the opportunity here is Google's to lose

We've been waiting a long time for Google's Pixel Tablet. First announced at I/O 2022, the device has leaked a lot in the intervening year. Between what we know officially about the device — it has Google's Tensor G2 chipset and comes with a charging dock — and unofficial info about other components, the tablet had been shaping up to be a pricey offering. But last week, leaked European pricing information painted the Pixel Tablet as a surprisingly good deal relative to competing options. If Google can find a way to sell this thing, it might just have a hit on its hands.

After months of leaks and rumors, the OnePlus Pad went official at the beginning of February 2023. It was an odd unveiling, as OnePlus never mentioned the tablet's pricing and release date. Eventually, the Pad got a reserve date and then a pre-order date, but its pricing remained a mystery. In the end, OnePlus confirmed that its first tablet will go on sale on April 28, and its price will be revealed three days before that — on April 28. That day has arrived, and the OnePlus Pad's final US pricing is now official.

Google's first self-branded tablet, the popular Nexus 7, launched over a decade ago in 2012. In the intervening years, Google's had a bit of a strained relationship with the tablet form factor, culminating in the ill-fated Google Pixel Slate in 2018. The ChromeOS-powered tablet was so poorly received that Google gave up on tablet hardware for several years.

This year's Google I/O is just a couple more weeks away, and we're already very excited for it to bring us news about all of Google's upcoming hardware like the Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold, and the long-teased Pixel Tablet. Leaks surrounding the latter have really been picking up lately, with new info arriving about release timing, its companion dock, and maybe the most important question of all: pricing. But lest you think the pre-release info was drying up, we've still got maybe the best Pixel Tablet leak all week to check out, with the arrival of some great new videos showing off the new hardware.

Android has a reputation for being less than ideal when it comes to tablets. While it's true that Apple's iPadOS enjoys access to more apps that are optimized for big screens, the best Android tablets are often outstanding pieces of hardware. Google looks like it's getting serious about tablets again, too, with Android's recent big-screen improvements and a new Pixel Tablet officially coming this year.

The Google Pixel Tablet will be the company’s first tablet in a long while, and the expectations are understandably high. A lot of time has passed since the disaster that was the Pixel Slate, and we can only hope that Google learned from its mistakes. The officially revealed details and the leaks are already promising, and now, we have another piece of the puzzle — a price.

Although Google exited the tablet market in 2019, the company surprised everyone at last year's I/O event, where it provided a glimpse of the Pixel Tablet. Not only did the device mark Google's exciting return to a space it had long abandoned, but it also promised a secret weapon that could give many of the best Android tablets a run for their money by combining a tablet and smart home hub in one device. Yes, the Pixel Tablet aims to double as a Nest Hub-like smart display when docked to a speaker device. Last month, we saw a bunch of renders of what appeared to be the Pixel Tablet's charging dock, and a new Amazon listing seems to reveal the accessory's price and availability date.

We've heard plenty about the Google Pixel Tablet since its half-tease, half-announcement at Google I/O 2022 — most of it from leaks. Now, 9to5Google reports it's caught wind of a potential release date for the tablet/smart home hub hybrid: the tablet should hit store shelves in June, potentially alongside the Pixel Fold.

Amazon Fire tablets may not be the most powerful devices on the market, but what they lack in hardware compared to other Android tablets, they more than makeup for in versatility. The Google Pixel Tablet was first confirmed to be in development during Google I/O 2022, and we’ve seen photos directly from the company at that launch event as well as during the Pixel 7 launch. We thought we had a pretty clear idea of what the device will look like, but two new leaked images of the product appear to show an addition to the hardware that we haven’t seen before.

Tablets are meant to give us a larger display for certain tasks that may be less ideal on smartphones, so it stands to reason that extending this screen size in creative ways is the logical next step. At CES 2023, we were teased with concept tablets that bend and slide, like Samsung Display's Flex Hybrid. But like flying cars, folding tablets have perpetually been several years away from reaching consumers. A new rumor, however, suggests that a Samsung folding tablet could materialize into a real product later this year.

The market for Android tablets isn't quite as robust as it is for smartphones, but it's absolutely not without its stars. Samsung has dominated this sector, delivering a whole range of devices targeting all variety of needs. Last year, it introduced the very capable (and very large) Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra, hoping it could provide a solution to users who wanted some laptop-class productivity. The South Korean company sure looks like it's gearing up to release a follow-up Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra later this year, and a new leak suggests it could land with some solid performance and durability upgrades.

It's no secret that Google is planning to launch a new tablet this year, thanks to a brief mention of the Pixel Tablet at its I/O 2022 event. Some were taken aback by the news, which signaled Google's intention to re-enter the Android tablet market for the first time since the days of Nexus devices. It's been nearly a year since the tablet was teased, so the device's release shouldn't be too far away. This may be borne out by a new listing on the Federal Communications Commission's website, where the device may have just made a pit stop.
